Finding refuge in personal and social change

Are you looking for a Buddhist community of people who study and practise the Lotus Sutra in the UK?
You’ve found your people.

Welcome to RKUK

Rissho Kosei-kai of the UK (RKUK) is a Buddhist community rooted in the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and the Lotus Sutra.

We come together to learn, practise and support one another in bringing the Buddha’s teachings into everyday life.

Some people come to study Buddhism more deeply, some are looking for a practice they can make part of daily life, and others simply want to meet a Buddhist community and see what it is like.

If you are already familiar with the Lotus Sutra, O-daimoku or Nichiren Buddhism, you will find familiar teachings and practices here, rooted in Shakyamuni Buddha’s teaching and the One Vehicle of the Lotus Sutra.

You can join us in person or online, and there is no need to know exactly where you are heading before you begin. You are very welcome to take your time, ask questions and explore with us at your own pace.

Friends of our faith

For a number of years now I have been very happy to have had the chance to invite the representative of the UK branch of Rissho Kosei-kai (RKUK) to take part in our annual Ceremony at Three Wheels Temple to Pray for World Peace and Reconciliation. This ceremony regularly brings together both clergy from the Church of England and monks and nuns from traditional Buddhist organisations within the UK, along with a number of eminent diplomats from the Japanese and Myanmar embassies and representatives of several international reconciliation groups. Our special encounter with RKUK has enabled profound interfaith insight and deep mutual understanding to blossom between our two Buddhist communities. It is my sincere hope and belief that this will lead to the most wonderful realisation of Harmony within Diversity, the quintessence of Mahayana Buddhism.

Our perspective

For centuries, the Lotus Sutra has been revered as the “King of Sutras”. At its heart is the teaching of the One Vehicle — a vision that brings the diverse teachings of the Buddha together as one path and opens the way for all people to attain buddhahood through the bodhisattva practice.

The Lotus Sutra brings the diverse teachings of the Buddha together in the One Vehicle. Across the centuries, Zhiyi, Saicho and Nichiren each renewed this integrative spirit in their own time. Rissho Kosei-kai stands in this tradition today, understanding the teachings and practices of early and Mahayana Buddhism as parts of one integrated path.

For us, Buddhist practice begins in everyday life — in our own hearts, our relationships, our homes and our communities. From there, it extends outwards into society, interreligious cooperation and work for peace.

If you would like to explore Buddhism and the Lotus Sutra further, you are warmly welcome to learn and practise with us, in a way and at a pace that feels right for you.

We hope to enjoy practising the Dharma together!

Nichiren Buddhism

The term “Nichiren Buddhism” is used today for a number of Buddhist traditions and movements inspired by Nichiren and the Lotus Sutra, with significant differences in how they understand his teachings and practise them.

Rissho Kosei-kai honours Nichiren as a great practitioner of the Lotus Sutra. Rather than understanding him in isolation, we see his life and teaching within the continuing tradition of the One Vehicle — rooted in Shakyamuni Buddha’s teaching and carried forward through figures such as Zhiyi and Saicho.
